Examining the Usage of Generative AI Models in Student Learning Activities for Software Programming

This study investigates the impact of Generative AI tools like ChatGPT on student learning in programming, comparing their effectiveness to traditional online resources. Conducted with 24 undergraduate students of varying programming experience, the research found that while GenAI significantly improves task performance, particularly for beginners, it does not consistently enhance knowledge retention, highlighting a reliance on AI that may hinder true understanding. The findings suggest the need for educators to provide guidance on integrating GenAI into learning processes to promote deeper knowledge acquisition rather than mere task completion.
