Faster Completion, Less Learning: Generative AI Reduced Study Time on Math Problems and the Knowledge They Build
A study leveraging a decade of data from $3.2$ million ALEKS learning interactions reveals that generative AI, particularly post-ChatGPT, has significantly reduced study time on text-based math problems, with college students showing a $26.9\%$ decline over eleven quarters. The research indicates that while AI use increased, it negatively impacted retention and correct response rates, suggesting a phenomenon termed "cognitive surrender." These findings highlight critical implications for educational practices and assessment frameworks, emphasizing the need for reevaluation of learning strategies in AI-enhanced environments.
