From Perception to Action: Can UI Interventions Foster Sustainable LLM Chatbot

The study presents a web-based chatbot prototype that incorporates sustainability-oriented UI interventions aimed at fostering energy-aware interactions with LLM-powered chatbots. Key features include a three-mode switch (Energy-efficient, Balanced, Performance), real-time energy feedback, pre-send energy estimates, and a usage metrics dashboard. The findings indicate that while users are concerned about AI energy consumption, they are often unaware of actual usage; however, the prototype's design successfully encouraged users to select energy-efficient modes without compromising usability, suggesting that UI design can play a critical role in promoting sustainable practices in AI applications.
