PragReST: Self-Reinforcing Counterfactual Reasoning for Pragmatic Language Understanding

PragReST is a self-supervised framework designed to enhance pragmatic reasoning in large language models (LLMs) by generating counterfactual reasoning traces for pragmatic question-answering tasks. It demonstrates significant improvements on four pragmatic benchmarks, achieving absolute accuracy gains of 5.37% and 5.50% for the Qwen3-8B and Qwen3-14B models, respectively, without the need for human-labeled data. This approach highlights the critical role of counterfactual reasoning in reducing errors related to pragmatic inferences, making it a valuable tool for practitioners aiming to improve LLM performance in nuanced language understanding tasks.
