Carbon-Aware Governance Gates: An Architecture for Sustainable GenAI Development

The paper introduces Carbon-Aware Governance Gates (CAGG), an architectural framework designed to integrate sustainability into Generative AI (GenAI) development. CAGG consists of three components: an Energy and Carbon Provenance Ledger, a Carbon Budget Manager, and a Green Validation Orchestrator, which collectively aim to manage the computational demands and carbon footprint associated with governance mechanisms in GenAI. This approach is significant for practitioners as it provides a structured way to balance the benefits of GenAI with environmental sustainability, facilitating responsible development practices.
