Regulating the Machine Contributor: Governance and Policy Alignment in Open Source

The article discusses the challenges posed by AI-assisted software development in open-source contexts, particularly regarding the interaction between autonomous AI contributors and existing governance frameworks. It highlights a comparative analysis of contribution policies from six organizations, leading to the creation of a six-dimensional taxonomy that assesses policy maturity and identifies gaps in alignment with regulatory frameworks such as the EU AI Act and NIST AI RMF. This research is crucial for practitioners as it outlines the need for coherent governance structures that can effectively manage AI contributions and enhance accountability in open-source projects.
